Curriculum at Scotts Park Primary School

At Scotts Park we are always striving to deliver lessons that children enjoy and feel motivated by. We believe that all lessons should be creative and cross-curricular wherever possible. Our curriculum offer is always evolving as we seek to improve and develop our practice.

We want all of our pupils to be confident readers, writers and mathematicians. Our teachers make sure these areas, as well as the rest of the National Curriculum, are taught in ways that engage the natural sense of curiosity that children have. Consequently, children become eager, confident pupils who understand the joy of learning and are well prepared for academic success.

We have developed our curriculum with our staff to ensure that there is a progressive coverage of both skills and knowledge within all curriculum areas. This has been created in conjunction with the National Curriculum. In English we link our teaching to high quality, engaging texts, specifically chosen to match the children’s age and to inspire their writing. Spelling and grammar are taught both discreetly and reinforced across the wider curriculum. Phonics is also taught alongside English lessons for EYFS and KS1.

Maths Beat and White Rose is used for our Mathematical teaching and is based on the mastery approach. Children are encouraged to link mathematical understanding and are challenged to further their knowledge throughout lessons ensuring that they become fluent with these skills.

Wherever possible, the wider foundation curriculum is delivered thematically so that pupils see learning has a context and purpose. The curriculum delivers progressive knowledge and skills across each subject area and pupils experiences are reinforced through trips and visitors in to school. Whilst skills development is a focus of our curriculum, we also ensure knowledge acquisition helps build cultural literacy for all pupils. Explicit skills and knowledge around Geography, History and RE are taught within these in order to provide our children with a rich learning base.

Our curriculum is underpinned by our ‘Core Values’ within PSHCE lessons and are monthly themes for class and whole school assemblies. Through our curriculum encourages and allows children to ask questions, be reflective and independent learners, collaborate and be aspirational. We ensure meaningful learning through a literacy rich curriculum which focuses on key texts to encapsulate the whole topic.

We are fortunate at Scotts Park to have a beautiful outdoor area with our own forest. We also carry out Forest School sessions for our children throughout the year.
